Discussion Questions: Chapter 4-Perception
Due: Monday, February 16, 2015; 9am

Hello Class,

Just a friendly reminder, as you craft your responses, please give each question consideration. You will graded on your ability to provide examples to support the claims you make and reference the text or class when appropriate. Also, please refer back to the feedback I provided on last weeks response to help strengthen this weeks response.

1.  What are a few common stereotypes in our society?
2. Do you think stereotypes are always a bad thing?

  1. 1. I believe there are many different stereotypes in our society. Whenever people see others they categorize them into what they think that person will fit into by their actions and appearances. We associate their actions with our past experiences and we use personal prototypes to decide what kind of person they might be. In the United States we might think the lower class Americans are lazy and don't try hard enough. While the lower class are the complete opposite from that. It all just depends on the person's experiences that is categorizing.
    2. Our culture has made stereotyping such a common thing, I think that others might not even realize they are doing it. I think they are not always a bad thing if the person categorizing them is not doing it out of hate or to be rude. We discussed in class that stereotypes can come from our past experiences. We notice certain things about a person but might not see the whole picture. Whether the stereotypes are right or wrong, people should try harder to get to know the person before perceiving people a certain way.

  2. 1. There are almost too many stereotypes today to just mention a few. You have the white trash/hillbilly stereotypes in the midwest and the south and, while not always entirely inaccurate, they're not good stereotypes in any case. Another one I think of is that every gay guy is feminine and sassy and every lesbian is masculine or "butch". I'm friends with people in the LGBT community and, while the stereotypes may be true of some people, they're not true of everyone.
    2. Stereotyping is not inherently bad, but it gets bad when it creates unfounded hatred and violence based around these stereotypes. When you stereotype people, you're basically trying to put these people in boxes that they don't necessarily fit into, which isn't good for anyone. It's what creates all the bad '-ism's, such as ableism, racism, sexism, etc. Even if the stereotype is 'correct', it's still just not a good practice, though it's human nature to do so.

  3. 1. There are many stereotypes in our society. One of them being that girls are weak. Girls in our society are often perceived as the weaker sex and women are often forced into designated gender roles because of this. It is also a common stereotype that if a man does a "woman's job" then he is weak or "gay. Such as if a man is a stay at home dad and the woman brings in income.

    2. I do not think that all stereotypes are bad, but they often create a certain standard for other people (good or bad). A good example of this could be " teachers are really smart", because teachers should be smart! A bad example of this could be " If you have tattoos then you are a criminal".

    1) There are so many stereotypes that exist in society today. We tend to form stereotypes unknowingly in a natural habit of trying to categorize our surroundings. We all form our own personal stereotypes of people based on what our experiences are but I also think a lot of the stereotypes today are formed with the media. Stereotypes that we are bombarded with every day through the media are ones such as the thug only looking for trouble, the ignorant foreigner, and the entitled American.
    2) I think that we do naturally associate stereotypes as a negative subject in our society. We do forget that stereotypes are schemas. Schemas are natural process that are brains act out in order to attribute the behaviors of what is going on around us. In this it helps us take in the intense amount of sensory information that we are given every day. I believe that when those stereotypes lead to inaccurate assumptions about a group that is when they come bad. Positive stereotypes can exist such as those surrounding athletes or talented musicians being hard workers. So I do not believe that stereotypes should always be considered bad.

  5. 1.What are a few common stereotypes in our society?
The most prevalent stereotypes in our society are the racial ones. For whatever reason, people with dark skin are considered “dangerous”. When a group of boisterous dark-skinned males is walking by, most women would grab their purse and walk faster. Another scenario with stereotypes is the gender stereotype. People don’t think women can do bad things. They inherently hold the belief that all (violent) criminals are male. So if this same group walked by, only they were female, that same woman would probably assume they were drunk and keep on walking.
    2. Do you think stereotypes are always a bad thing?
Stereotypes aren’t always a bad thing as long as the individual recognizes them as stereotypes and keeps an open mind and is willing to adapt their stigma to fit the new information. For example, if that same woman from above drops her wallet and one of the men politely give it back to her and wish her a nice day, her view on his race may differ. But in that same scenario that man could have very well taken her purse. It is always better to be on the cautious side and open to change than to be taken advantage of.

  6. 1. There are so many stereotypes in our society. The one I really hate is that people who were tattooes are considered as dangerous, violent or worse. It is not normal, but I understand it is scary if their tattoos are on their face and it makes them scary, but not all of them are dangerous. There are several people who smart and specialized in his or her work/job, but they do not get a better job or raise, just because they have tattoos, which is so sad( my opinion). Some of them just want to express them selves by tattoos or some people have personal reason to wear them and not accepting them is a bad way.

    2. It is not always a bad thing as long as they not start looking at them like a lower level of the society. We do not have to despise any stereotypes just because they are not wearing their hair like the others or they wear different clothes, everything has a reason and by just looking at someone we can not jugde him/her by how they look like, and if somebody 's skin is not white it doesn't mean that they are criminals. We have to know the background before say anything or even judge.

  7. 1. Stereotypes cannot be helped. We automatically create them and use them when we meet people. One of the main stereotypes used in society is on people social class. We are brought up with separate stereotypes on working, middle and upper class people. Then there are racial stereotypes, for example the idea that African Americans are more criminal, which is completely wrong.

    2. Stereotyping isn't always a bad thing because sometimes they can be used to help people. For example if a child is coming from a working class family then teachers at a school could decide that they may need extra help in class. However stereotyping can lead to a labelling effect where people act up to their stereotype, such as a someone who has family history of crime, could be stereotyped as a criminal and this could lead to this person acting up this label and becoming involved in criminal behaviour.

  8. 1. A common stereotype that we might see in today’s society would be that of the poor community. A lot of people tend to have personal prototypes towards the poor in that they associate certain traits, behavioral patterns and characteristics with them. For instance if we see somebody in dressed in dirty or unkempt clothing we might jump to the conclusion that they are poor. Another unfortunate stereotype that seems to still be in our society is that of gender. We have a habit of associating things like machoism and strength to men mainly, while on the other hand women are often viewed as the more fragile and submissive gender.

    2. Yes I believe that stereotypes are always a bad thing in the sense that nobody should be tied down to a specific role that fits in to their biological, religious, ethnic, geographical or nationality backgrounds. Societies all around the world should be able to recognize the fact that all individuals have completely unique backgrounds and personality traits. Trying to sort people into certain groups with other people based on one similar trait that they all have in common is wrong.

    1. A few stereotypes we have are things like: All blacks are good a sports, men are stronger and smarter than women, all Mexicans came to the U.S. Illegally, Irish people are drunks, etc. There are so many more stereotypes out in the world. Stereotypes are created everyday and used against people everyday. Some stereotypes have been around for a very long time. For example, all blondes are dumb, if you’re a feminine male you’re “gay,” if you’re a masculine woman you’re “gay,” etc. Stereotypes normally “label” people, cultures, and races. Due to stereotypes being around for so long, I doubt they will ever end.

    2. I do think stereotypes are a bad thing in some cases. I feel that they’re bad because why would someone or a group of people want to be labeled? I am pretty confident that no one likes them. Over time some stereotypes have just been accepted and used constantly even by the same races but even than someone using a stereotype towards someone of the same race is not okay. I personally feel they are hurtful and rude. Sometimes people, even myself say stereotypes in a joking matter but it depends on the person you say the stereotype to. For example, some people have goofy relationships with friends and can tell their blonde friend, “you’re so blonde,” indicating they’re dumb because their blonde and because of the stereotype known. Some blonde friends are okay with it and take it as a joke but others may not. Overall I think that most stereotypes are hurtful and rude but it also depends on the person you are and the relationship you have with the person you say the stereotype to.

  10. 1.In our society their are many stereotypes based on people’s race, religion, economical status, and the community you come from. People tend to categorize and assume characteristics of people based on the representation that society has given them. Other examples of stereotypes are that people with tattoos are somehow less qualified or professional, or women do not belong in the work force. Stereotypes can be very harmful because an entire group of people are judged not based on the person they really are.
2.Stereotypes are unfortunate because they create a perception of a person that may not be true. Because of stereotypes we judge people based on exterior things rather than judging them by their personalities. It is important that though stereotypes is human nature, it is our jobs to be more considerate and get to know someone before we judge them.

  12. 1) I think that there are so many different stereotypes that it is difficult to only focus on just one of them. Often when I think of stereotypes, however, race, religion, gender, and biological/physical factors come to mind for me. For example, growing up I have always been stereotyped as "dumb" or less intelligent because of my blonde hair. It was always hard for me, because although others tried to make it a playful joke, I always perceived it as something offensive and hurtful. Personally I feel it is impossible to look at the physical aspects of a person to judge the content of their character. I do realize, however, that this can be hard not to do because society has basically always seen it as tolerable behavior.

    2) As hurtful as stereotypes often can be, I do not believe that they are always a bad thing. Some stereotypes can be positive and make a person feel better about themselves. An example of a positive stereotype would be that "glasses make you look intelligent", so if you want to appear and feel smarter, possibly wearing glasses can make you feel highly of yourself. I feel that the only way a stereotype can be negative is when you let it interfere with the way that you feel about someone. An example of this would be the used car salesman we talked about in class and the negative thoughts that came to mind when we saw his photo/learned his job title. In this instance we let the personal prototype get in the way, which caused us to sort of dislike him.

  13. 1) There are so many stereotypes today, it'll be hard to mention all the stereotypes out there. As humans we tend to use our personal beliefs and experiences to label who they are and what they have become in our eyes.

    2) No I do not think that stereotypes are a bad thing. In class we reviewed that we label stereotypes because of our experiences, but we only see a glimpse of who they are not the whole picture about them. As humans I feel like we do it subconsciously, so I do not see and wrong doings in that part.

  14. 1) Once common stereotype in our society is that all people ofo Asian descent perform well in school. Another stereotype in our society is that women are bad at driving. A third stereotype is that girls perform worse in math than boys do. These are all harmful stereotypes that our society holds on to.
    2) I think that stereotypes are usually a bad thing. For example, if a child of Asian descent does not always perform well in school he could feel like he is not performing the way society thinks he should. Another example of how stereotypes can be harmful is if you tell a woman she is a bad driver simply because of a stereotype she might actually start driving worse than she normally would

  15. 1. There are lots of stereotypes that are passed around in our society. Common ones are African Americans are good at sports. Men drive better then Women. Asian are better at math. There are more to go around but in my opinion I do not think these stereotypes will not go away because they are brained into all people of society so they are stuck with those opinions.

    2. I think stereotypes can either be a good or bad thing but it depends on the way people perceive those stereotypes. They can be good if people accept them and believe they are positive. Like calling an Asian smart at math or saying African Americans are good at sports. People can take this as a compliment which can be a good thing. But stereotypes can be bad especially if they are directed in a negative way but you don't fit that stereotype. Like all African Americans commits crimes like stealing and murdering but I would be offended because I don't do any of those things.
